If I had to say I have a passion, it is for photography; it is the one thing I keep coming back to. I like photography for what it is; an ever changing and evolving art form, and one that has literally moved out of the ‘Dark Room” in to the light of day. Even though I enjoyed working in the darkroom I now prefer the digital process, and have sold most of my darkroom equipment. The digital process now provides the same tools (in a different form) that were available in the traditional darkroom (dodging, burning, toning, etc.) without the smell and lethal chemicals (to the environment and the photographer); and no more stained fingers.
When someone views one of my photographs I want them to have the sensation that they can walk right into the scene, and feel as though they are standing where I was when the photograph was taken. I want the viewer to feel the season the colors and temperature (or lack there of) and the mood of the scene. Most of my photography revolves around nature, but I also like to look for the things that most people do not or in some cases ignore which can tell a story. I like to think that I take a different prospective on the common objects found in our world. I like to walk the forest and observe the great wonders of our world, as well as the streets and alleys of our great cities; exploring and observing, and occasionally making a photograph.
Ninety percent of my new photographs (2002 forward) are high resolution digital negatives, and when I do use film, it is scanned with a high resolution film scanner, digitized and processed as a digital negative. I do not process the film or digital files immediately upon returning to my office. Instead I let the negative or digital file set for a while before developing them; this allows me to get a fresh look at what I photographed. I may review negatives or process digital files many times before they are printed; making sure what I print is what I envisioned. My photographs are printed using Epson professional quality printers and inks and various archival quality papers, and are mounted using archival materials.
My photography has been published in Sail Magazine, Popular Photography, Motor Age and others. I was a finalist in the Canon/Photographers Forum Magazine photographer of the year competition in 2007. In 2007 I was privileged to do three one man shows and three group shows. I have won various awards and contest, and my work in held by a few private collections including a recent purchase by National City Bank for their permanent collection.
Finally, I believe that the camera is tool that can produce more than a snapshot; I believe it allows the photographer to tell a story. I hope you like the stories I try to tell through my photography.
If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact me, and I hope you enjoy what you see.
