Artists Statement: Profound, but not confusing; invoking emotion but not underestimating the Viewer's intelligence; exploring all possibilities but never starying too far from certainty (or creating new certainties). Re-assembling reality in my paintings seems to work. There's ambiguity between subject and background, between form and space. I've been playing with these relationships using brushy marks and overly intense colors. My style has evolved from study at the Art Institute of Chicago, Le Faculte des Lettres, and Indiana University. However, the most crucial experience in my creative explorations was the year and a half that I lived in France. I was living in a state of hyper realism and my paintings blossomed. They began to exist in their own universe which became as interesting to figure out as the one I was experiencing in France. I have grown from a strictly observational based educational background to a more non-observational approach to form, color and brush technique. Using painting as a way to understand various body mutations such as pregnancy, surgery, and scars has become my primary focus.
