I began my after college life as an elementary school teacher. My first painting lessons began when my twin sons were about 4 years old and my older son was in first grade. I went once a week and stayed only one hour each time. In the beginning I started in a watercolor class, then took drawing and continued to take one class at a time of different types. When my children were in college I taught school again and then at 55 went back to school myself and earned my FBA in painting and drawing. By that time all my sons were out of college and I could devote more time to painting. I am now living in St. Augustine, Fl, exhibiting in a gallery in the old part of town and just recently had a large article about my art work in the local paper. Now at 70 years of age I hope to be able to continue painting for a long while without too much interuption. I belong to several art organizations and enjoy the fellowship of other artists around town.
For those of you who are trying to paint with children at home just remember it may take longer that others to get where you are headed, but keep on heading in that direction. You may have to stop for a few years off and on, but always start back up. Good wishes to all artists out there struggling to make it. Joan Dorrill, Florida artist |
