Every mask contains some form of idealized beauty and expressive power which inspires me to collect them and use them as subject matter in my paintings. Whether I'm placing them in surreal environments, or just painting their "portraits", I enjoy the challenge of giving these inanimate objects a life of their own; projecting personality through color, composition and style.

Each painting leads me on a journey of discovery as I look both inward and outward for meaning and inspiration. These mask paintings have helped me to learn more about myself and I hope the viewer takes away something new from each experience with one of them.

Come by and see more of my work at www.donmichaeljr.com.

As soon as I finish a new painting I talk about it on my blog at www.donmichaeljr.com/blog.

I now have a Facebook Fan Page.

Hi Dan & Happy Valentine's Day!  Thanks for the comment on my artwork!  Actually, they are painted shells holding back the curtain, but you're right..they do resemble my nails!!  Never thought of that, LOL.  And there's no actual frame...the piece is on an old wood panel and I hand-painted it and decorated it with all the objects to make it seem like it's framing the "stage".  Glad you saw it as a frame since that was the intent.

As always, your paintings are awesome!  Good luck with your shows!

:) Lauren

Thanks for the comment Don!

In "The Year of The Don" it's good to be Don Michael Jr!    Course, it's also good to be Kathleen Krucoff.

Thanks for the compliment on my latest mask. It means a lot coming from you! I have a whole file of to do masks that I am working on for a solo show here in Fresno in March. I am hoping to get at least 6 more done. Cross your fingers! Take care!
