I am a recently retired nurse (28 years) who has always loved to paint, and basically am self-taught. I have taken classes in art at the R.I.School of Design, and am currently taking watercolor classes at the East Side Art Center under Carolyn Wolfe. Now that I'm retired I have more time to devote to my first love. I recently became a member of the Watercolor Society, and I feel like I'm just getting my second career going.

I enjoy a yearly trip to Block Island with the school for plein air painting. The island is just beautiful and I come back with tons of photos for painting all winter.

God, family, my grandchildren, the beach, spinning, new paint brushes, blank sheet of paper.

Not too much turns me off.

photography, crocheting, reading, grandchildren.

Isn't retirement great?  I retired 2 years ago and can't imagine what it would be like to ge in that grind again.  Since then I have devoted most of my time to creating art.  That is except for the past couple of months because we moved and are still trying to get everything where it belongs.  Your subject matter is great.  I especially like the kids on the beach.  The water around the swan is great.

Yes, this is a fun time of life - kids grown - a time to focus more on ourselves and our dreams.  I figure we can only get better.  You are well on your way.  You seem very disciplined.  Your work is very, very lovely.  Lucinda

Thank you for visiting my page and leaving me a comment.  You have beautiful work and are prolific.  We are sort of in the same boat.  I just retired from a career in teaching and am pursuing the art now, which is what I wanted to do all along.  I saw one movie with Jim Carrey from Rhode Island.  It looked very pretty there.  We are on opposite corners.  I am in San Diego County.  I have lived in SoCal my entire life. I have never been to New England and hope to visit some day.  It is fun to see the people from everywhere and imagine the life in that part of our beautiful country.  I have seen some snow on the news these past two days (Ohio), and it was 80 here yesterday.  It is supposed to cool down by the weekend, though.

Thank you for the nice comment. I will be adding more paintings but right now i'm playing " nurse" to my brother who just had his shoulder replaced, and I can't access the photos of my paintings from his computer.

Happy painting, Alston

I relate very strongly to your still lifes-you seem to be multi-directional in your motifs-not easy to do. Thank you for your comments.

Hi Neighbor,

I see some places that I've frequented in the past with my watercolor pad.Tell me,... how is life post nursing career?- I'm setting my sights on early retirement myself as long as my painting career picks up- one day at a time- every Friday brings me that much closer to the leap of faith. Keep up the nice work --- Regards  cldmonet

Thanks for the note about the train.  Your work reminds me of my short life in France.  About second careers, I think that's why I'm here. I'm just so thrilled to be able to communicate with other people who feel the same way and have the desires.  First that I'm not crazy, and secondly, that I'm not too old to get started.  Thanks again, Seagirl Rebecca
